Directories and listing websites are among the best ways to start your digital marketing campaign especially if you plan to launch a new business soon. Over the past 5 years hundreds of directories have been created, and now in 2022 many of them don’t work or demand a fee for registration.
It happens that we recently launched Mobiteam.co.uk, and listing our digital agency on these directories was one of the first things we’ve done straight away after launching. In the beginning, we went on quest – to be digitally present in 100 web directories and business listing websites. If we managed to achieve our goal – you’ll see in the end.
Why business directories are important?
In the beginning, when you launched your website, all you have is the functionality and content. If you’re new to the industry, or to the local market (like in our case) then you know nobody, and nobody knows about you. So, to start spreading the word about your business is what directories are best at. For any business, directories are the small boost that establishes your presence on the web. And there are fewer, paid ways that would give you the same result in such short amount of time.
What kind of business directories there are?
Business directories can be divided by business category, size, or display type. For example, if you recently opened a coffee shop and want people to spread the word about it, then it should be listed in directories that list restaurants, cafes, and bars among others. Aside from that, you should also list in local business directories such as Google my Business and Bing.
If your business is not new to the market, and it has a history around, you should avoid listing it on startup directories. Instead of that, general directories, local, and niche directories would work perfectly for your business.
As for display type, there are websites that lists businesses within a map – such as Google My Business, or Bing. And there are directories that are focused more on visual and text content; that tell a story about your business and even compare it using several criteria – such as TechBehemoths, G2 or CrunchBase for example.
Regardless of the purpose, display option, size, and location, business directories are definitely worthy to have your business listed on, for the following reasons:
- Great first-time exposure impact
- Brings relevant traffic and leads
- Showcases your business in different ways
- Has more information about your business than you have on your about page
- You can compare your business with competitors
- You gain relevant, contextual links from their websites that establish a reputation level on search engines

Business Directories that take too much to approve/reject your submission
Beside this list of active and fast-reaction business directories, there are also a bunch of directories that take more than 2 weeks to give a proper response to your business submission. Here’s the list:
Facts and Stats About Business Directories
In October 2022, we visited 263 business directories and tried to list Mobiteam.co.uk and we encountered the following situation:
- A large number of business directories are don’t accept submissions anymore
- Tens of business directories have their submission process broken, or the directories are dumped
- Several business directories are using a map as the way of displaying businesses
- The “under review” period of a business directory usually takes up to two weeks
- Most of Business directories verify users via email confirmation
- Business directories have an unclear ranking method
- Some business directories charge a symbolic amount of money for “business verification processes”
- A lot of business directories limit their functionalities for free-registered businesses.
